Killers of the Flower Moon

Martin Scorsese tackles a difficult story involving the Osage Indians living in Oklahoma.  This based on a true story occurred in the 1920’s as oil was discovered on their land and  members of the tribe keep dying under suspicious circumstances.  Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio are excellent in their portrayal of wealthy white Americans who infiltrate the tribe to access more wealth.  It’s difficult to stomach the horrors that occurred on this land to the Native people.  The coldness with which these crimes are committed are accurately captured and tell a story that every American should hear.  The costumes and filming capture the audience making the 3 and a half hour runtime fly by.

She’s Gotta Have It

Spike Lee’s first full-length feature film is an artistic portrayal of a woman who maintains sexual relations with three different men while they all try to convince her to commit.  Nola resists the commitment to maintain her freedom and enjoys different experiences with each man.  It is a comedic look inside the insecurities that influence decision making and depicts various demographics within the black community.  As advertised, the film is a sexy and funny example of inner city life.

Recommended for anyone that is trying to better understand themselves or fans of artistic film making.

Dolomite Is My Name

Not enough gets said about this movie.  Eddie Murphy does a terrific job portraying the real-life comedian and rap pioneer Rudy Ray Moore.  After experiencing hardships in the entertainment industry, Rudy Ray Moore decides to seize the opportunity to create comedic content for the under-recognized black communities of America.  With ground-breaking performances in stand up comedy, on vinyl records and eventually in the movie business, he uses his determination and strong self-belief to blow past barriers and find success in a genre all his own.  Rudy Ray Moore should get more recognition for how his work shifted the portrayal of culture and hopefully this movie will help with that.

Recommended for any fan of comedy, black history or hip hop music.

Blazing Saddles

Wildly racy, this over-the-top comedy is a must see film.  Mel Brooks along with the writing of Richard Pryor push past today’s politically correct film making boundaries with a tale about a corrupt business man who pressures a politician to appoint a black sheriff to a small Western town.  Set up for failure, he wins over the town and the audience with his wit and witticisms.  No demographic is safe from the satire here.

Recommended for any fan of comedy or American history.

Poor Things

Not for the faint of heart or weak-stomached.  This is an intense movie filled with profound ideas, visual gore and graphic nudity that should probably be saved for a Friday Night.  A raw description of the indulgence of human desires and dissection of cultural norms between sexes leaving you twisting in your seat and looking away from the screen.

A Friday night movie.

Born On The Fourth of July

This brutal depiction shows common forms of childhood indoctrination influencing adolescent decision making.  Tom Cruise plays Ron Kovic, a promising high-school graduate who volunteers for the Vietnam War to protect American ideology only to end up as a drug addicted, paraplegic.  Based on the true story of Ron Kovic, who eventually became an anti-war activist after experiencing the horrors of modern day warfare and the reality of returning home to a country that doesn’t support the war, this movie makes you rethink America and sticks with you for days.

A great movie for the weekend.
